Some Commonly Asked Questions
FAQ
What if I've never gone to therapy before? What is it like?
Therapy provides a private environment (which means that, except in certain exceptional cases, what you discuss remains confidential between you and me) where you can express your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and work towards the changes you desire with a licensed therapist who engages with you impartially and without judgement. Most people find having a dedicated, confidential space to express themselves very helpful.
What should I expect in sessions?
In your initial session, we will focus on understanding what has brought you to therapy at this moment, as well as your overall history that may be affecting you right now. Together, we will establish some goals to guide our future sessions. Sessions are generally 50-55 minutes in length. Like building any new habit, therapy is most effective when consistent and intentional. Most clients began with weekly sessions and decrease as time goes on.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, therapy sessions are confidential to protect your privacy and trust. There are rare circumstances where your information can be shared in a limited capacity that will be reviewed with you before session.
What is a licensed therapist exactly?
Several disciplines can be licensed to perform psychotherapy services. At a minimum, this requires a graduate degree with a practicum and a certain amount of supervised hours post graduation followed be passing national licensing exams. In total, this process takes between 8-10 years after entering university.
